Lamp life and fan noise of Home Cinema 8100
Epson indicates that the anticipated lamp life on the Home Cinema 8100 is 4000 hours regardless of whether it is run in Normal or ECO mode. The replacement lamp retails for $299.99. So if you drop 15 cents into a jar every time you watch a two-hour movie, you'll have the cash on hand for the new lamp with the time comes to replace it.
In general, the less expensive 1080p projectors generate a bit more fan noise than the more pricey models, but none of them are very loud anymore. On the Epson 8100, fan noise is a low whisper in Normal mode, and lower still in ECO mode. But you need to be sitting within about three feet of the projector to notice an audible difference when you switch modes.
Even in high altitude operation, fan noise is a low whisper, just slightly more audible that Normal mode. In normal operation, if you place the projector about six feet or more from the audience, it is unlikely anyone would ever hear it. Few users will ever choose to run in ECO mode solely to reduce fan noise. Rather, getting the ideal amount of light on the screen will be the reason to use it.

" This is my fourth projector, so I have some experience now. The image is about 10 to 11 feet wide. The brightness is outstanding, and you can watch movies even in a room that is not completely dark. If you want to watch a movie and get the full effect of the movie, you will probably want to watch in a dark room with one of the "theatre" or "x.v." settings that have greater color saturation. Streaming HD content from the Roku, your image will look just like you are the theatre -- amazingly sharp, with no visible pixels from a reasonable viewing distance. I highly recommend this projector for use in a home theatre. If you have a commercial venue, you might spring for a $5,000+ commercial projector, but for home use I actually can not think of any improvements to make on this projector. One bonus that you might miss ... this projector will turn itself off after 5,10 or 30 minutes (you choose) once the signal is no longer being projected. " The Epson 8100 is at the perfect sweet spot as far as value. There are projectors with more features, but you'll pay a lot for very minor gains. There are cheaper projectors, but you lose a lot for only slight savings. This projector is right in the middle and perfect for pretty much everyone. The main pros here are 1) extremely high brightness for this pricepoint; 2) great zoom range and lens shift; 3) crisp colors with excellent blacks; 4) no rainbow effect, as it's LCD. In more detail on each point: We use this in a living room facing a wall that's basically floor to ceiling picture windows with no drapes. On the top two brightness settings, the picture is fantastic and clear even in the middle of the day.
